Your questions, answered

  • A transfer station is a facility where waste is temporarily deposited and consolidated before being transported to a landfill. Because landfills are far away from Greeley, it creates many efficiencies by reducing:

    • transportation time for drivers

    • transportation costs for city and households

    • fuel consumption for operators

    • wear and tear on roads

    • noise pollution from trucks

At our facility, waste trucks will drive into our state-of-the-art facility with a roof to prevent odors and reduce environmental impact. The trucks will efficiently deposit waste into trailers, designed for quick reloads onto much larger 18-wheel trucks that are hauled to a landfill.

Whereas conventional technology takes 15 minutes to move waste into trailers for transport, it will take our operation just five minutes. Speed is our advantage both commercially and environmentally.

  • The city of Greeley has outgrown its existing waste infrastructure because of its rapidly growing population and housing boom. The closest landfill in Larimer County is almost full and expected to close in mid-to-late 2025. This means that haulers will need to travel even further distances to reach landfills.

The transfer station makes waste management far more efficient by consolidating waste locally in Greeley onto large 18-wheel trucks that then make the journey to landfills. The city sought out this service, and we are providing the solution.

  • Yes, the transfer station will be open to the public to receive non-hazardous waste but the deposit is not free. Waste will be weighed on certified scales with a fee generated per pound. This scale for the public will be separate from the scale used by commercial vehicles.

  • No. We are not burning any waste on site. We are only receiving, temporarily holding and transferring non-hazardous material to landfill.

  • No. We specifically designed the facility with a covered roof with speciality misters to prevent any odors from affecting the surrounding community. Waste will also be moving rapidly through our operation. It is not meant to sit and further degrade at our facility. The purpose is to transfer it as quickly as possible to landfill.

  • We will only accept non-hazardous waste that does not pose a direct threat to human health or the environment.

We will accept non-hazardous e-waste, but for an additional fee. It goes into a separate waste stream for treatment by certified e-recyclers.

  • No, we will not buy any valuable materials such as ferrous or non-ferrous metals. But we will take these materials for processing in other facilities or direct people to these services nearby.

We are not separating any recyclable materials on-site either. This is outside the scope of our operation.

  • We have designed a state-of-the-art facility in compliance with all applicable environment, health and safety regulations. Our operations will mitigate risks from water and ground pollution with:

    • Roof to protect waste and prevent contact with the outdoor environment

    • Pavement in all operating areas

    • Odor-eliminating misters

    • Stormwater capture, detention and natural treatment

    • Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP)

  • In compliance with Greeley zoning laws, we thoughtfully designed the facility to make a positive impact on the aesthetics of the community. The most important feature is the building itself, which will keep Greeley’s waste from public view in a state-of-the-art facility. Second, we are investing in significant landscaping so that grass and vegetation will blend the facility naturally into the surrounding environment. When complete, the area will likely appear greener than its current state.

  • DCB, a locally owned and operated Colorado builder, is responsible for construction. DCB has built three transfer stations in the Denver area in the last four years. Our facility as planned will be state-of-the-art.

  • Once constructed, Jeff Westrick will be responsible for operations. He is currently the General Manager of All Recycling North, a transfer facility in the Denver area.

All Recycling North is a subsidiary of Metro Metals Northwest, headquartered in Portland, Oregon. All together, they have decades of expertise transporting and recycling materials with far greater complexity and risk than this operation.
